Which is the best for you? 3mm vs 5mm yoga mat?
Are you thinking of starting a yoga practice? If new to yoga you are probably going to want to choose a mat with the right thickness that is appropriate for you. There are lots of yoga mats on the market, different lengths, different thickness, different width, all different kinds of colors and material. Here are the questions to answer when picking a mat.
Where will you be practicing?
Will you be if you're practicing on a wooden or hard floor or a cushioned floor. If you like the feel the floor beneath you then you might prefer a thinner mat. Look for a thinner 3mm mat with good a lot of good stickiness. If you are hands and feet are sensitive to the hard floor then go for a thicker mat.
Do you need a small or larger mat?
Some mats are 61cm wide, some are 65cm wide. Some are 183cm - 200cm long. Depending on how big you are you will need to choose a wider mat or a longer mat. If you're a tall you probably want to have a little bit of a longer mat so you can actually do your yoga. So depending on your body size you want to choose the mat that is best for you.
Do you have joint or back problems?
In yoga you will be using your wrists, knees and back. If your wrist or knees are sore then you will need thicker mats with enough cushion to support your joints and back.
Will you be travelling with your yoga mat?
Walking to and from yoga studios with your mat is unavoidable. Thinner mats will be easier and lighter to carry. A thick mat will quickly become a burden. Softer mats will also be easier to fold up. Look for a lighter medium weight mat that will meet your needs. Natural rubber and thick mats will be much heavier to carry but may last longer.
The above selection of 3mm and 5 mm yoga mats are lightweight, with a sticky surface. They are made of PVC and come in a variety of colors.
